although you and i could not be more different ideologically or pedagogically, i find your presence in meetings extraordinarily calming and helpful. your politic narrative histories and your long institutional memory are invaluable. you seem to be devoted to making the department a better place, with a brightly functional future, rather than to your own personal agendas. you make reasoned arguments that it seems necessary to hear, coming from your position of comparatively greater power and knowledge. i only wish you could make others behave similarly.
