NOLA: city of living rooms

last night we saw "X3." (totally good.) in new orleans movie theaters, all the social contract-type agreements you think everyone tacitly agrees to in a movie theater do not hold at all. and i mean none, including the agreement that people are watching a movie. in other words, it's not just that new orleans audiences talk during the movie, because when their comments are directed at the screen, you're grateful because at least they're acknowledging that a movie is showing. but people take phone calls in movies, and chitty chat.

chad and i saw a movie once in which people were chatting with each other about what they wanted for dinner that night, and talking very loudly in order to be heard over the movie that they had paid to see. "SHOULD WE JUST PICK UP A BUCKET OF CHICKEN? DOES DARYL LIKE CHICKEN? WHAT TIME SHOULD WE TELL PEOPLE?" etc. and last night was the same: phone calls being made and accepted; many happy toddlers and some not so happy ones, chatting and cry; conversations in regular tones of voice about not the X-men. and people coming and going in and out of the theater all the time (not the people with loud kids, btw) like it was like, well, their living room or something.
