addendum to the below
i don't really understand why people in other professions that require comparable education/specialization don't have to justify their existence or explain the way they spend their days nearly as much as humanities professors are asked to do. (or maybe they do?) what do people think actuaries or people who sell title insurance or IT support people or opera singers do all day? (oh, and do they think, say, opera singers only work during opera season and only at performances?) even if i was an academic chemist people wouldn't assume they know what i do all day (and probably wouldn't care), and yet many people do assume they know exactly what my english professor job entails and moreover that it doesn't really require special training. i wonder what's up with that? people! it's just one little nerd corner of a big fat world! and it does require specialized knowledge!

The opera singer is a good comparison. Admittedly, though, I imagine an opera singer sucking on lemons, shopping for glittery dresses, and being fanned. I am certain that I am wrong.
As a CPA with a large international accounting firm, every day was measured and billed in 10 minute increments. More than 10 percent "admin", you better have a pretty good reason or next review may be your last.
