MLA minus moi

this is the first year in a while i haven't gone to my profession's giant conference. i've been to the last three: in san diego as the grad member of a search committee; in philly as an interviewee (botched that one. hint: don't take xanax when you need to perform); and in d.c. as an interviewee again (nicest hotel; worst city). i've been catching up on various blogs (see, for example, most of the ones on the glist to the right) and everybody's running into one another and having a great old time seeing old friends, etc. i am suffering small pangs of jealousy, because god knows i love socializing, but then i remember the horror, the horror, of always being "on"; of looking like every single other person around you; of uncooperative underwear and/or shoes in professional situations; of always having to look over your shoulder when you're talking, etc. etc. etc. etc. all told, i guess i'm pretty glad to be at home on the couch.

oh, and guess what? i still haven't gotten my luggage from our trip to the OC. . .and we got back wednesday night? the hell? i doubt i'll ever see it again, and i'm filling out the claim form for lost luggage (you turn it in after 5 days, btw), but i can't help but wonder where on this big earth it is, and who has encountered my dirty workout clothes, among other treasures?
