religion is at the front of my brain because everything in orange county, where my inlaws live, is very extreme, and religion and real estate prices especially so.
when i was in (catholic) high school, in my junior year religion class we learned that christians (catholics) are morally obligated to help poor people no matter what. we were even tested on this. plus, the jesus movies of my youth bore this out: they were about jesus' life, spent helping people and not judging them. meanwhile, i suffered the first major disillusionment of my life, as my school at that time began building a multi-million-dollar football stadium. it was shocking to me, the discrepancy between what we were learning and what the school was doing. shocking!
well, i realize that we all live with contradictions and all that, but my little sense of righteous indignation was awakened again, just this christmas in orange county when i fraternized with people with more money than i personally have ever knowingly encountered, people who are so bloated with piety that once again the discrepancy seems sinfully obvious. and i suppose this phenomenon is again borne out by the current crop of jesus movies, where he is just magical or in pain, with all the helping stuff left in the dust. bah. i suppose every civilization has such bloated blowhards living in embarrassing, damnable disproportion to their purported beliefs. i just don't often encounter them.
