coming home from the mall exhausted and zombified after agonizing about what to give nephews and niece (me by marriage, chad by blood) for christmas that they don't already own, that doesn't propagate values like "girls look cute while boys make things," and that they might actually like, it is very very excellent to open the door to presents from my dear friend L, who made magic in the form of: a christmas tree (left), which i've been really wanting but haven't had the chance to look for the perfect one; amy sedaris' important book about how to throw parties (in part by serving dishes that include potato chips as an ingredient); and a DVD of a fireplace so that we can gaze contemplatively into the television. (the DVD will go perfectly with my firewood-scented candle.) ah, friends. here's to them.
