at the gas station very close to the house (2 blocks), i overheard a [very handsome and white] kid in a faux-fur overcoat ask a [regular looking hispanic] kid in a car if he "wanted to snort."
i could have misunderstood, but i swear that's what he said. the reason i doubt myself is, what self-respecting drug dealer, no matter how small time, asks people in the middle of a busy parking lot, out loud, in the middle of the day? i wasn't standing very close. it was like they were just saying, "did you see the bills game," or some such. also, i thought everybody was on meth these days which you can make in the privacy of your own home.
now, i don't do drugs myself? but i also don't really care about other people doing them. i'm fairly certain marijuana should be legal, and i'd vote for it, but i'll never like attend a rally or something. and i really don't care about people buying and selling mj, like at all, since i know it really doesn't invite violence or whatnot. but "snort"? i mean, is that cocaine? i'm totally naive here. anyway, it sounds like something that makes people less mellow and that costs more than mj. which equals turning people into assholes. and i don't like assholes in my neighborhood.
i tend to think it's a pretty thinly veiled racist myth that any stranger is going to come into your house or attack you or whatever. of course, this does happen once in a while, but i think the violence associated with drugs is violence internal to the business, rather than any directed at bystanders. like getting caught in crossfire. or run over by someone freaking out. or whatever.
hopefully the gas station is just where they buy and sell and hopefully nobody's going to cheat anyone or try to trick them out of anything and bring a gun just in case.

Here's what *I* think happened:
A striking young man sauntered into the gas station wearing his favorite new fur coat -- this, after all, being the gas station in which handsome young men from The R.O.C. gather to display their wares and, as it were, engage in what the kids call "fashion battles" (which became popular after one too many kids broke their neck spinning on their head during a "break off").
Anyway, this young man showed up in his new coat and spotted a likely contestant. He then threw down the typical R.O.C challenge: "Would you like to retort?" which, in the traditional patois, signals that the possible competitor could reach into his pocket, or bag, or car and retrieve his own dazzling attire. Impartial judging ensues, and the winner is declared Petrol Prince of the Day.
I read about this ritual somewhere.
So worry you not -- sounds like you're in a nice place. And your biggest problem is that you cannot seem to distinguish between "faux fur" and a truly fabulous piece of outerwear.
