new to me
- the ROC has an extremely high concentration of deaf and hard-of-hearing people-- perhaps the highest in the nation. (fact check?) my university houses one of the few deaf colleges in the country. for the first time i have deaf students, and so therefore also interpreters, and i think it's forcing me to be clearer since it has to go through an extra person. also? on the first day there was lots of chatting, i.e., signing, while i was talking and today that will end.
- for the first time i'm using presentation software (keynote for Mac, like powerpoint for PC)!! very exciting. i'm hoping/planning that it will encourage/force students to write down stuff i say, which i believe the discussion format in a writing class tends to discourage. mostly, my dream is that in their notebooks or wherever they write "AUDIENCE" and "REVISE" and notice it occasionally. i think that's the most i can hope for.

What does it say that your modest hope that the students will write down and occasionally notice 2 words from your class seems, to me, overly ambitious?
It says that as your quarter begins, mine really, really needs to end.
i love me some keynote! good luck with getting your students to right stuff down. when my students see electro-slides their first response is: can i get a copy of those before class? to which my response is: no.
noted difference from the land of the nerds.... just for laughs.
funny to think about people not taking notes in any scenario. the young people i know are prone to take notes during normal conversation (which I try to discourage in my effort to curb what is perceived to be anti-social behavior), let alone a forum where they are supposed to... in which case those notes are word for word, in color coded, tabbed sections.
