my lynchian (as in david) provenance

in this post-industrial global economy (etc., etc.), it is easy to see that i come from a home that was made by children of the cold war. as every generation thinks they are doing things better or smarter than the last, i certainly railed against suburbia in what i figure is a very similar way to how my parents pursued it.

which, i am sure, is why i loved david lynch movies so very much, in particular of course blue velvet, which seamlessly shows not the flipside to the cold war dream, but another aspect of it. certainly, some movies of lynch's have been better than others, though i would also have to add that a review of "lost highway" in the chicago reader kind of blew my mind. anyway, thanksgiving brought with it the recognition of how very lynchian my entire post-cold-war suburban background is, and much of that is concentrated in the person of my mother, who has A LOT in common with good old david lynch. both: were born in late 1940s; are from small town america; are blond; have an affinity for disney; both are, consciously or not, deeply interested in the aesthetic and philosophies of the suburbs; both use "golly" as an expression of surprise without irony.
