in which i finally learn what it takes to be invited to a party around here

i am at my fancy, expensive and much beloved gym, post-workout, weighing myself and getting my coat in the locker room.  it (the locker room) is full of women putting on very showy clothes and tons of makeup and hairspray.

random middle-aged muscly tennis playing woman in locker room:  what are you all doing?

one of the women w/ rollers and false eyelashes:  we're having a surprise party!!  the theme is rock-n-roll!!  we're all dressed as different rock-n-roll stars!!

another woman, in sequins and platform shoes:  you should try to guess who we are!!!

(middle-aged muscly tennis playing woman leaves without comment)

me (to woman in psychdelic satin shirt and with huge ratty hair and because there is nothing about the situation i can resist):  you must be janis joplin!

janis joplin:  that's right!!  i can't believe you got it!!!

me (to woman in go-go boots and teased hair):  you are obviously nancy sinatra!

nancy sinatra: (shrieks) yes!!!  and guess what?? (coquettishly) the birthday boy is named "frank"!!!

me: you mean like nancy's dad?  frank sinatra?  ol' blue eyes?  like,  father of nancy sinatra?

janis joplin:  (cackling, actually a lot like janis joplin, come to think of it) that's what i said!!  it's creepy, right?

me: er, whatever!

nancy sinatra:  but frank sinatra's first wife was actually named nancy!!!

me:  but that's not the nancy sinatra you're dressed as, is it?

(janis joplin rolls her eyes at me conspiratorially and kind of mutters that they've been trying to explain this to her)

everyone except nancy sinatra:  YOU SHOULD COME TO OUR PARTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You should not go to their party. Nor, for the record, should you affiliate with the apparently humorless and musclebound tennista. You should, however, be given a free membership to that gym, and maybe even be paid for your classin up the joint.
