maine diary: christmas in the hospital and/or a cannibal and/or jail

me, i like to take a situation and really just go ahead and imagine the most melodramatic conclusion possible.  so i did on monday when, after less than 24 hours in maine i went totally berserk for lobster and had a lobster roll and lobster bisque for dinner, after which i assumed i was going to have a heart attack or maybe die from cholesterol.*  in any case, i did have some digestive irregularity.  which made our decision, on tuesday, to cross-country ski a very long route with which we were unfamiliar a worse idea than it already was.   during the worst stretch, uphill into the sun with my quadriceps so cold they were burning, the memory of that lobster roll was the only thing that comforted me.**  i was pretty sure that the guy who had given us directions was a serial killer/cannibal who had misdirected us in order that we fall into his trap, and that when he would cannibalize us he was in for a BIG surprise when he found out how frozen solid my biggest muscles were.  the bodily exertion from the day before may make our decision on wednesday, to go for a walk around the little compound/resort where we are, seem sensible, as it is low-key and works out some kinks, and because that walk included nosing around in the (closed for the day) clubhouse where the hot tub is.   hot tub!  but it wasn't our fault that the door was unlocked even though it was supposedly closed, and that when i tried the door in order to formulate our hot tub plan, an alarm was set off, which brought the police out, which meant that we had to answer some uncomfortable questions which, believe me, could have been A LOT more uncomfortable.  another near miss!  in any case, ho ho ho!  i wonder what will happen tomorrow as a result of our near-incarceration?!

*i love lobster.  i almost never ever think about it, though, until i get to maine, which is surprisingly often, and then i go bananas with the desire for it, in all its forms.  lobster, butter, cream, lobster, yes.  thanks to cuz & co., i could go at a whole lobster, sure, but that's like an entire process that is very messy and potentially painful and that i need to be braced for, preferably in a large group about to undertake the same process.  so this time i opted for the form of lobster that require only opening my mouth and chewing.

**it is almost as good and pleasant to remember eating lobster as it is to look forward to eating it.  that's one of the many remarkable things about lobster!

I feel the same way about lobster, and about salmon. When I'm at my folks', I'll happily eat salmon for two meals a day, every day--and want, like, three times as much.

SEAFOOD!!!

after DFW checked out, i finally read "Consider the Lobster." i haven't been too psyched about eating it since then (before? LOVE). i was *really* depressed about the suicide, and i got this advice: "you need to be about 6 feet shallower." maybe so. so i'm thinking that maybe i should eat a lobster as a way of symbolically going there (?).

whatever the case, i enjoy your gustatory glee :)

happy new year!

so did opening the door to the closed club house really bring the police?
