so, nothing calls one's attention more to one's own communication style as when you have to translate it into something, or when it's re-presented to you in another format. i'm getting used to having my tone of voice rendered by the sign language interpreters' faces in the classroom, although often i prefer to think i'm a lot more subtle and sophisticated than their faces might indicate. but of course a face can only do so much. or can it???!!!
anyway, in sign language i know the alphabet, and that's worked for me a couple of times, but it would seem that, besides "thank you" and "i'm sorry," the most convenient sign for me to know is for the word "great." as in, apparently i say "great" to students a lot.
student 1: my grandfather died, so i have to catch a plane, so i have to miss class.
me: GREAT!
student 2: where is your office?
me: GREAT!
student 3: i understand what you meant when you said that you don't give grades, we earn them, but why did you give me a C?
me: GREAT!
student 4: i am always in the lab, and even though i really like your class, i don't have the time to devote to it that i would like.
me: GREAT!
student 5: you don't know anything about Darwin, you stinker.
me: GREAT!
student 6: so, then, you want us to explain how the evidence is related to our claim?
me: GREAT!
student 7: i would rather rub hot shit in my eyes than take your advice about my writing.
me: GREAT!
etc., etc., etc., etc., etc.

From the looks of it, you must have Brandon, Matt, Andrew, and Brian, and in your class. GREAT!
