dear professor elizabeth,

remember when you said you'd look at drafts of our assignment before we turned them in? well, when i asked about that, i DIDN'T mean that i wanted you to comment constructively on my draft in order to make it better according to the criteria set forth before i turn it in for a grade. what i DID mean was that i wanted you to tell me it's perfect and therefore i'm perfect, because the "draft" is actually "my soul" and is, therefore, not up for your puny judgment. although we may colloquially call it a "draft," this precious, precious bit of writing--although it is a formal letter to a public figure--is actually not a work in progress, but a perfect, lapidary representation of my most inner being, and so when i submitted it for your feedback, really that was moreso submitted for your edification and unfettered praise than for ACTUAL feedback. you can't improve on something so sanctified. sorry for the misunderstanding but really, you should have known.

sincerely,

student

They write such lovely and eloquent letters; it stand to reason that their drafts may indeed be perfect! Verily, if the assignment is to write "a formal letter to a public figure," I'd give this an A. (My only criticism being that there's no such thing as a "soul".)

cuz: you guessed correctly! however, it should be noted, these letters capture the general spirit of the most vocal; not all of this is true of all students all the time.

anon: thanks!
