correspondence

dear guy at the gym who wears matching sweat suits, ankle weights, leg weights, and who goes to cycling classes, only to cycle very slowly, standing up, with very high resistance the entire time (not following anything the instructor says),

what are you doing?

sincerely,

elizabeth

dear people who think i started calling myself "elizabeth" (from "beth") once i got too big for my britches in graduate school,

i started it when i showed up for a job as a WAITRESS. when they asked me if i went by anything shorter, and i looked around at the uniforms and the tables and the bosses, etc., and thought i could use a wee bit of dignity, and answered "no." besides, wouldn't the world be kind of awesome if everyone acted too big for their britches?

sincerely,

elizabeth

dear baby pandas,

have mercy on me, please, i beg you to stop being so goddamned cute. (thanks to cuz for the pics)

love,

elizabeth

anon: it seems like the readership of this blog is perhaps a bit wider than its intended audience. there is some massive communication breakdown here. i am in no position to defend my profession, but it seems like you are angry at me? or at professors? anyway, all i meant by "too big for their britches" is how great it would be if people saw themselves always as having more to offer than the world tells them they do. and i'm sorry you feel this way, but if it's any consolation, i'm sure someone somewhere resents you, too.

dude, nobody's crying. and take your very pompous advice to look inside myself elsewhere--you have a lot of presumptions that could stand some scrutiny. and clearly you have never schlepped food and taken orders from someone and worked on your feet all day around plates of food, or else you would know that it sucks and can be demoralizing. perhaps you have had the good fortune of never working in a demoralizing job. i can't believe the gall you have on here to read so selectively and act as though 10 percent of what's on here is representative of my being and is up for your pronouncement. Not to mention your own presumption to act as though you know me when you won't even reveal yourself. go away, your weird bitterness is not welcome here.
