this is what TV is for
i have often thought that the Puppy Bowl, on animal planet during the superbowl, is really basically the best possible use of the technology called "television." soothing, unadorned, not trying too hard, under no illusions about itself, no narrative, very very very very cute. (except for the last criterion, all of the preceding is also why i like "millionaire matchmaker.") don't get me wrong--i watch lots of TV, including bad TV, with relish and gusto (see previous parenthetical). but sometimes it seems they just get it exactly right. such would seem to be the case with the 8 p.m. broadcast this wednesday night on PBS of a show called "Sandwiches That You Will Like." no kidding--look it up yourself. ahhhh.

You know that Gershwin tune "Sanwiches that are Liked By Me"?
Tuna on rye,
Steak on a roll,
You can have your dang pasta salad,
I'd just as well have another steak on a roll
one of my all time faves
