one of the greatest lies perpetrated on american women

. . .is that sitting on a toilet seat can get you sick. you cannot catch germs through the backs of your thighs unless you have an open wound there. you can, however, catch germs from touching your face and mouth after touching doorknobs, kitchen towels, handrails on escalators, vintage clothing or furniture, keyboards on public computers, etc., etc., etc. but this stupid idea that you shouldn't sit on a public toilet seat is just one of many instances of americans being discouraged from using their goddamned brains once in a while. (another is bush's recent comment upon vetoing stem cell research that it's immoral to kill one life in order to save another. huh??!!) anyway, as long as you're not straddling the toilet seat and rubbing your crotch all over it, you're not going to pick anything up (and actually probably not even then). because guess what? it's only been the backs of other people's thighs that have touched it! i mean seriously? think about where the backs of your thighs touch. they might actually be the cleanest part of your body. the weird dictum to squat on public toilet seats rather than sit is far more about fear of butts and crotches than it is about how germs are actually passed along.

Hey, de-lurking to contradict, how friendly. I actually agree with you in general, and hate the squatters who leave the toilet seats piss-splattered, but I did catch crabs from a toilet seat once. I should add that can't swear it was the toilet seat, although I don't know what else it could have been as I wasn't having sex with anyone, it was a truly disgusting toilet, and crabs are a bit different, being mobile.

Anyway, I really enjoy your blog and hope you don't mind the perhaps anti-social delurk.

the fact that tyra banks, well anyone, is gainfully employed doing THAT is really disturbing.

anon/R: you know? when i was writing that? i thought to make the crabs exception. but i don't know what i'm talking about in that realm (hi, dad!).

also, i don't take your de-lurking as anti-social; rather, you made a stand in the interests of Science. huzzah!

cuz: i know, i know. especially since it's WRONG.

there's no accounting for idiots.

i was going to add a link to a website (one of many) that teaches women how to pee standing up. because - well - clearly, that must be answer to the larger long tendered questions of equality. (uh-huh).

but wasn't sure if i should post a link on the blog.

interestingly enough, google seems to produce an equal quantity of sites instructing men how to pee sitting down. hmmmmm....

Well, hot damn. A stand for Science. Go me. And, more seriously, thanks for the reassurance.

Hi Daughter!

And can you or Anonymous - the Defender of Science - help me understand the term "de-lurking?" While I think I catch the meaning in context, I am still unsure.

Love, Dad
