i am in another world

here in the south, everything's totally different than how it was up north! and it's not quite the things you think-- the amount of numbskullery and confederate flaggery is about the same, for example. it's not like i moved from sweden, for crying out loud. but consider:

  • there is some form of pork in nearly every aisle in the grocery store. well, particularly i'm thinking of a big display that includes pieces of ham pre-cut to fit your biscuits.
  • lots and lots of people drive mustangs here. as in, ford mustangs. as in, newish ones. one house near us even has two of them, and one is done up in school colors.
  • people play cornhole here, a lot, and especially during tailgating. i had heard of cornhole before, not only as a jokey term for human anatomy, but also as the game. however, little did i know how totally bananas the football-loving southern world is for cornhole the game. yards near us have semi-permanent cornhole setups (not the same house as with the two mustangs). on football weekends, the tailgating area is a veritable ocean of cornhole. if you can imagine such a thing.
  • in the ROC, our mail came in the morning and UPS came in the afternoon. here it's the opposite!! UPS in the morning and mail in the afternoon!!!

I glad you linked for "cornhole," because I'd never heard of it. Once I saw the picture, though, of course, a favorite pre-school game except with BEAN-bags not CORN-pouches and the target was usually a clown's mouth. I'm so glad the south has kept its love of motor-skill-building childhood gamery. Watch out though, because if history holds, they'll soon be busy scouring National Geographic for nudie pics, then blowing off SAT prep Saturdays, hanging out in the smoking lounge, rediscovering the classics, etc. all the way until they are all of bunch of PhDs. And THEN what will they have on their lawns? Not much.

Also don't forget that many more people where you are now (def not Sweden) go to church. In their mustangs. And a lot of those churches are against cornholing in its more secular sense. Riddle me that.

Cornhole, aka "bag-o" is also particularly popular during any summer gathering in Indiana. I've also been invited to participate in a bag-o tournament, which I politely declined.
